Neomelubrina is a potent pain-killer and fever reducer. Some people refer to it as super aspirin although it has an effect more similar to paracetomol than aspirin. It does not have any anti-inflammatory action. It contains the drug metamizole, which is sometimes called dipyrone. Unlike aspirin or ibuprofen, Neomelubrina has no toxic effects on the kidneys or liver, does not have any cardiovascular side effects, and it does not cause stomach ulcers. Medically, it is used to treat severe pain, such as that due to an injury or recent surgery. It is particularly effective for treating digestive tract pain, such as in cases of colic. It can also be used to reduce fevers and relieve muscle spasms. In rare cases metamizole can trigger the development of agranulocytosis, a collapse of the immune system. It should be used with caution by individuals with asthma because occasionally it can trigger bronchospasms. Although it does not appear to have any teratogenic or embryotoxic effects, just in case pregnant women should not take this medication.
